5 Exercising Benefits: Healthy Eating & Nutrition Tips Mini Series

Healthy Eating1

There is just no way around it. You will no doubt about it reach a certain weight and then plateau. Unless you add exercise to the mix. Changing your eating habits is HUGE but adding exercise will add extra benefits.

So what are the benefits?!

1. You will be tired less. Yes this sounds like a complete oxymoron and I’m not saying that you will be tired less after a week of working out. It takes time, just as it takes time to lose weight. I know you’re thinking, “That’s impossible, I’m going to be exhausted after working out!” Yup, you probably will. But I can guarantee that throughout the day you will eventually have more pep in your step.

2. Body Change. You will notice that your body changes. Exercising creates more muscles and reduces body fat. You will become more lean. You will notice that your muscles become more defined and a little less jiggly wiggly.

3. Your Heart. Exercising is excellent to get your heart beating and blood pumping. I would recommend that if you haven’t exercised in quite some time to consult with your doctor. Exercising helps keep your heart strong and healthy.

4. Stress Reliever. It’s hard to be stressed when you are sweating your bootay off! Exercising is a great time to relieve some of that stress from work or school.

5. Controls Weight. A great benefit to exercise is that it does help control your weight. Let’s be real, you can’t diet forever. If you have reached your weight goal, exercise helps you maintain that goal long term.

I’m sure there are MANY, MANY more benefits but these are just a few that I could think of. We aren’t done talking about exercising. Next, we will talk about how to stay motivated.

Garden for 2012

DSC02878

I’m a little behind getting this posted. We planted our garden the first week of April! I guess this is more exciting to see anyway because there are actually plants to see!

Funny story that wasn’t really that funny at the time: We worked so hard one afternoon and got all of the plants in the ground. We bought actual plants for the tomatoes, squash, eggplant, and cucumber. Wouldn’t you know it, that night it stormed. Not only did it storm, it HAILED! I’m talking huge, golf ball sized hail. I just knew it ruined the entire garden. Luckily, I was wrong and everything was OK!

Ok so here’s a picture of our backyard. We moved the garden from the previous year.

DSC02877

Our new garden is twice as big, if not three times as big, as our old garden. There are 7 glorious rows! Also, check out the awesome swing HERE.

DSC02880

We’ve got 2 rows of corn. Not sure how this is going to go but we are trying it out :)

DSC02884

Squash that’s already blooming.

DSC02882

Of course I’ve got tomatoes! I will eat about 3 a day when they start producing.

DSC02878

From left to right here’s what we have planted. 1st row: Radishes and carrots. Carrots may not make it :( 2nd row: 3 squash, 3 eggplant. 3rd row: 3 jalapeno, 3 tomato. 4th row: 5 tomato, 1 cucumber. 5th row: Watermelon. 6th and 7th row: Corn.

I’m so excited for some FRESH veggies!!

How I Lost the Weight: Healthy Eating & Nutrition Tips Mini Series

Healthy Eating1

So I left you guys hanging on my story of weight loss. I’m sure you are on pins and needles wondering how I did it.

I downloaded this FREE app on my Iphone called My Fitness Pal.

I seriously believe that his app was what aided me the most in this journey. When you sign up you will input your weight, decide how many pounds you want to lose a week, and what weight you want to achieve. Based on your weight and weight loss goal there will be a suggested daily calorie intake.

Note from my sister (AKA the future Registered Dietician): You really should not eat less than 1500 calories per day. If you stick to 1500 calories daily you will cut about 3500 calories a week which equals one pound of weight loss.

The reason this app helped me so much is because it made me learn about calories. I had NO clue about what was in food. You seriously will be appalled if you have a 1500 calorie allowance and decide you want fast food for lunch. There goes more than HALF of your calories for the day.

This app is excellent because you can look up different foods from different restaurants or from the grocery store and there will be a calorie amount. There is also an option to enter in a recipe with the ingredients and serving size and it will tell you the calorie content.

So what did I eat? Here’s a super rough guideline of what I did a few years ago. I’m going to talk more about what I eat now in a later post.

Breakfast:

Grits and Toast
Cereal (serving size) with 2% milk

Lunch:

Lean Cuisines
Excellent because there is not guessing on calories. Be careful when choosing meals. Some have a ton of calories. I tried to keep lunch under 350 calories.

Sandwich with Turkey and chips pre-packaged
Baked/Grilled Chicken with Broccoli

Snack:

Banana
Apple
100 Calories Snack Packs
100 Calorie Popcorn

Supper:
Whatever I decided to cook for dinner. I just ate smaller portions.

Helpful Hint: You NEED to have a cheat day. I promise, for your own sanity, eat what you love. If it’s Mexican food, eat some chips and hot sauce. If it’s cake, eat cake. Just be careful and don’t over indulge! Eat a smaller amount and don’t stuff yourself.

So what I want you to take away from losing weight is this:
You MUST/HAVE/NEED TO, be aware of every morsel you put into your mouth!

MAKE yourself input EVERY.SINGLE.PIECE.OF.FOOD. that you put in your mouth. Don’t lie to yourself and say, “Oh it’s just one tiny piece of chocolate” or “Oh it’s only one tiny bite of cake” I’m just not going to enter it. Enter EVERYTHING!

If you cheat, you are just cheating yourself.

You WILL get frustrated when you don’t think you are losing weight fast enough. I had to really remind myself that it took me years of gaining weight and it was going to take longer than a month to lose it. You can’t give up if you don’t lose a pound in two weeks.

After I lost about 10 pounds, I plateaued. I was at 150 and I knew I needed to lose a few more pounds. It wasn’t until a YEAR after I started my weight loss journey that I finally bucked up and joined a gym. That’s helped me lose and keep off those 5 extra pounds.

I’m going to really dive into exercise in a later post!

Hope this helps and don’t forget to ask any questions!!

Colorful Spring Wreath {Tutorial}

DSC02871

Seeing as how my door has been neekkeed since after Christmas, I thought it was about time I made one. My spring wreath from last year was looking a little worse for wear or I would have just hung it back up.

I used the old wreath form to make this one. I had to remove all of the grassy stuff and flowers.

DSC02863

This was a Dollar Store wreath so it was pretty thin.

DSC02864

I grabbed some batting and wrapped it around and then hot glued it in place.

DSC02866

I grabbed some yellow fabric that I already had and cut it into strips. Then take the strips and wrap around, hot gluing as you go.

DSC02867

I wanted a Springy looking Welcome on my wreath. I used my Lifestyle Crafts Embossing Folder to leave a fun texture on the buntings. (As always, use the code YOUNG to receive 20% off your order) I then used my Cricut to cut out the Welcome letters.

DSC02870

I then made a bunting sandwich with some jute twine. I wanted the bunting to be a little thicker and more substantial.

DSC02874

I then just placed the bunting at an angle and added a few rosettes.

DSC02873

For the fabric hanger I just hot glued it together.

DSC02875

I can’t say that it’s my most favorite wreath ever but I think it turned out pretty cute.

DSC02872

The colors sure are fun though!

Renu: Update any room in a SNAP!

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Leviton for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

I've not heard of Leviton Manufactoring until just recently. After checking out their website, I've found that the Renu line has just about ANY kind of switches, combination switches, wall plates, dimmers, remotes, tamper resistant outlets, and quick port connecters. If you are looking for something specific, no doubt they will have it! Not only do they offer all of these but you can also choose from 20 different paint colors. They are also easy to swap out if you change your mind.

Renu® > Brands > Solutions from Leviton Web Site

I would love to try out the dimmers for the living room. We only have a fan light in their and sometimes it's just to overwhelmingly bright. It would be nice to be able to tone it down a little! Below is a picture of our dimly lit living room. There is also a picture of which switch I would like to switch out. Wow, say that three times fast!

Avocados from Mexico Wake Up a Winner Sweepstakes

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Avocados from Mexico for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

I've already told you guys of my super LOVE of avocados. I'm always trying to find a place to sneak them in. One place I haven't really thought about is breakfast. Ummm... why not!? Avocados are high in calories and fat but they are the GOOD kind of calories and fat. You're better off eating an avocado rather than cereal any day!

There is one really simple recipe that I want to try when I need a quick breakfast.

Avocado Toast Recipe:

1 avocado

Salt

Black Pepper

2 slices of toasted bread

Optional: 2 slices bacon, cooked and halved or 2 tablespoons chopped tomato

Preparation: In a bowl, coarsely mash avocado with a fork; season with salt and pepper to taste. Divide avocado onto toast and spread to cover.
