My Story: Healthy Eating & Nutrition Tips Mini Series

First of all, many of you may not know this, but I’m pretty tall. I’m 5 ft. 8 1/2 in. to be exact. There are many blessings to being tall. Finding long enough pants is not one of them but that’s now what we are here to talk about.


One of the blessings of being tall is that it helps you hide your weight. And I did that really well.


After high school I couldn’t tell you my exact weight but it was around 140-145. I worked as a waitress, which required a lot of walking, for about 2 years after high school. I ate pretty bad. Fast food I probably gained 5 pounds or so. I attribute not gaining more to all the walking.



Then I got a job as a teller at a bank. Of course, I sat on my behind ALL day long. Of course, I didn’t change my eating habits. And of course, I packed on the pounds. I honestly had no clue how much I weighed. Now this sounds like a horror story waiting to happen. It’s really not as bad as you think. No I didn’t gain 50 pounds or anything.



While working at the bank I did exercise occasionally but I didn’t change my eating habits at all. Therefore I did not really lose any weight.


I got married June 6, 2009. You would think that this would have motivated me to lose weight. It didn’t. I didn’t even diet for the big event!




Instead, I got married weighing more than I had in my entire life. I still don’t know exactly what I weighed.


It wasn’t until that following Spring of 2010 that I decided that I was sick and tired of feeling bad about my body. Complaining did nothing. I was tired all the time. That was when I bought a scale. The dreaded number was 162. I was mortified. At this time I was wearing a size 12/13. Considering my height and age, I was teetering on the obese line. That was when it just clicked for me that I had to do something. Because I wanted to feel better about myself.



When people found out that I was going on a diet, I got the response, “Why? You’re already skinny!” Remember that part about hiding my weight. When I gain weight it goes to the stomach, booty, hips and saddle bag thigh area. You can’t see it in my face or my legs. So yeah, I did look skinny to everyone. But it’s a completely different story when you put a bikini on.


And now today, I am back down to 145. I’m now a size 8/10. I have kept off those 15 pounds for 2 years now. The ONLY way I have kept them off is because I did things the right way. By the “right way” I mean that I didn’t go on an crazy ridiculous diet. I would still like to lose that last 5 pounds.


However, one thing we are going to touch on is that it’s not all about the number on the scale.


I’m going to tell you what I did to lose the weight and more importantly what I do to keep it off. Because that’s half the battle. And let me tell you, this battle is uphill both ways.
