DIY $10 Cupcake Stands {Tutorial}

DIY Cupcake Stand

For the monkey themed baby shower that I hosted at my house, I wanted an inexpensive cake stand to add height to the table and put cupcakes on. I finally figured out this inexpensive way to make my own!

I headed to the dollar store to look for stovetop covers and candlesticks. I couldn’t find any stovetop covers there but I did find some pizza pans. Of course they only offered one size. I grabbed one and 4 candlestick holders for $5. I then went to Walmart and found some white stovetop covers for about $5. Total cost was $10 (or technically $9 because I didn’t need one candlestick holder!)

DSC03793

The stovetop covers were already white but the pizza pan and candlestick holders needed a quick coat of white spray paint.

Cupcake stand 2

I liked the look of the candlestick holders upside down. I then grabbed some super glue and glued them all together.

Cupcake stands

You have enough supplies to make two cupcake stands.

On the left, you can see the cupcake stand filled with cupcakes with the super cute monkey cupcake toppers!  Find the appliqued onesises HERE, the bicycle freezer paper stenciled onesie HERE, and the food label printables HERE.

Simple Yet Elegant Bedrooms

Hello Young and Crafty readers, I am Jessica and I am so excited to be a guest blogger on this blog, I’d like to thank Hannah for having me, I am going to share some simple but elegant bedrooms with details and tips. Hope you’ll like it.

Simple Yet Elegant Bedrooms

Having a beautiful bedroom is a must. Not only does this give you confidence in your skills as a homemaker, but it can actually help you to sleep better too. You do not have to spend a lot of money and time completely gutting your bedroom and installing new bedroom suites to have a wonderful bedroom, and what follows are some quick and easy tips that will help you transform your bedroom simply and elegantly!

The walls of your bedroom can have a great impact on the overall appearance of the room. If your walls are grubby or grimy, festooned with spider-webs and covered with finger marks, it does not matter how new and well-cared-for your furniture is, the room will look dingy. Apply a fresh new coat of paint or re-do the wallpaper and then be sure to maintain it, clearing dust and cobwebs regularly, wiping up marks as they appear and stopping children from putting grubby hands on your walls.

Keep the floor nice and tidy too! If you have a bedside rug make sure that it is lined up nicely every morning – make it an early morning routine to straighten the whole room quickly as you dress and make your bed and it will quickly become second nature. If you like wall-to-wall carpeting invest in the best quality carpet that you can. Carpetsofquality has the best range of carpets; the carpet will last many years in good condition, especially in a bedroom, which is not generally a high traffic area. On the other hand, if wooden floors are your ideal flooring material, have a lovely hardwood floor put down, and use soft felt pads on the feet of your furniture to protect it. Hardwood flooring is quite expensive, but if looked after properly, can last many decades.

(Image)

Do not accept anything in the bedroom that does not belong there! It is easy to 'pop' something (a bicycle, treadmill or exercise bike, for example) into the bedroom 'for now' to get it out of the way, while a guest sleeps over, or a dinner party is hosted. The problem arises when the item is simply left there. Insist on extraneous items being returned to their rightful place very quickly, before you get used to having it in your room! Try to ensure that your bedroom holds only those pieces of furniture that you need, and do not let it become a depository for items that do not have a place elsewhere in the home. Anything unnecessary or unused should be binned, recycled, sold, or donated to charity.

Get crafty in your bedroom, making little flourishes and pieces that claim the room as uniquely yours. Purchase some thin foam and some beautiful fabric and learn how to make your very own padded hangers for your best garments. If you choose fabrics that go with your d├ęcor, it will add vital finishing touches to your room, completing it in some indefinable way. Lavender bags are so quick and simple to make, and, if you grow your own lavender, cost very little. Sew a small square on three sides, fill with a mixture of lavender flowers and cotton wool (or foam filling), then complete the final edge for an extremely simple scented bag.

Alternatively, cut out a circle of fabric. Leaving a decent space for the frill, sew two rows of straight stitching, also in a circle, parallel to the circumference. Gently pull the ends of the sewing thread, until the fabric begins to bunch up and gather, forming a little round pouch. Fill the pouch with lavender, rose petals or even shop-bought potpourri, then tighten the threads and tie it off tightly, adding a couple of stitches to prevent it coming undone again. These small bags add a powerful fragrance, not only to your undergarments, but to the entire room, suffusing it with wonderful feminine floral notes. Lavender is known to be relaxing, and the smell will help you drift off into a good relaxing slumber.

Your bedding and the soft furnishings are the area of your room where you can really have a big impact for only a small monetary outlay. Bedding is available in a wide and diverse array of choice these days and you will be able to choose between plain fabrics, small print floral, lively and vibrant stripes and even quirky or humorous prints. Yorkshirelinen has a fabulous range, not only of patterns, but of fabrics as well, ranging from cool crisp cotton to luxurious satin effect. If possible, purchase curtains that match or complement the bedding to help round off the appearance of the room.

Applique Tie Onesies

Applique tie onesies

I just love making these cute little tie onesies for baby boys. They are an easy and personalized gift and let’s face, too cute! You really do not need to be an amazing sewer to do this. The bow tie is a little harder but that’s only because it is curved.

Here is what you will need:

Appliqued Onesie

Onesies

Fusible interfacing

A print out of a bow tie and regular tie on regular paper

Take the print outs and cut out the ties in the fabric of your choice. Then take your fusible interfacing and cut out the shape tie shapes.

Applique tie onesie 2

Now iron on your fabric with your interfacing in between your tie and onesie. It will stick like glue. Then stitch around the edges of everything.

Applique tie onesies 3

I used them at the shower we threw for my friend as decoration. Dual purpose… gift and decoration! You can find the bicycle onesie HERE.

Have you appliqued anything before??

Raspberry Orange Smoothie

Raspberry Orange Smoothie

When I find raspberry’s on sale, I swoop them up! They are delicious in a smoothie. This smoothie is one that you make the day you plan to drink it. Citrus fruits, like oranges, do not do well the next day.

Raspberry Orange Smoothie 1

Ingredients:

2 handfuls of raspberries (35 calories)

1 medium sized orange (65 calories)

1/4 cup of vanilla greek yogurt (35 calories for Kroger brand)

2 handfuls of spinach (40 calories)

1/2 cup of ice

Total Calories: 175

Raspberry Orange 2

Throw everything in the blender. Make sure the ice is on the bottom and then the spinach. I usually blend the ice up pretty good before adding anything else. Blend until smooth.

Raspberry orange Smoothie 2

Ahh, so refreshing!

Monkey Cupcake Topper and Food Label Printables

I’m not the greatest at making up printables but I wanted to give it a shot for the baby shower that I hosted at my house. I wanted a cute monkey for a cupcake topper and food label place cards. They were both relatively easy to make. The color greens do not match perfectly but unless you are holding them next to each other, no one will know the difference!

I googled and found the picture of the monkey and based my idea on this printable that I pinned. I can’t find the original source now.

Feel free to use these if you like!

Here is one way I used the monkey printable at the baby shower. There is just something about monkeys, they are too cute!

3rd Blogiversary

3 year blogiversary

This years anniversary totally snuck up on me! Wow, I cannot believe that I have had this little ole blog for 3 years now. What a ride it has been. I ultimately do this because I love to create things. It is an added bonus to be able to share my creations with all of you. I cannot tell you how blessed I feel to have this little slice of the internet to call my own.

Thank you for your continued support of Young and Crafty. It means the world to me :)

In honor of this occasion, I am going to leave you with 5 things you may not know about me:

1. I love gum and chew it constantly. I seriously have three flavors to choose from in purse at this very moment.

2. This fall I am starting my internship. I have worked so hard to reach this goal. It is exciting and terrifying to finally be here!

3. I think about food constantly. As I am eating one meal, I am thinking about what my next meal will be. I’m working on the whole self-control when it comes to food thing. It’s very hard.

4. Out of every type of crafty thing I do, working with wood is my favorite.

5. My husband and I just celebrated our 4 year anniversary. Although it seems like only a tiny drop in the bucket, I have no clue where the time has gone!

Monkey Baby Shower

Monkey Baby Shower 4

One of my friends from school is having a baby and so a few of my classmates and I decided to throw her a shower. This is actually the first shower I have ever been involved with decorating for and hosting. It was so much fun to pull together!

We obviously went for a monkey theme of brown, green, and a hint of light blue. I will share the cupcake topper printable and food label printable that I made and used for the shower. I’m also going to share how to make a super easy cake stand for under $10. The diaper cake was made by my friend and her mom and turned out too cute!

Monkey Baby Shower 1

I whipped up a few onesies to hang from the window as well as the ever popular poofs. You can see the bicycle onesie HERE and the bow tie onesies will be posted soon.

Monkey Baby Shower 3

We had fruit kabobs with fruit dip, cookies and cream cupcakes, green sugar cookies, and an amazing bbq chicken salad that’s scooped up with tortilla chips. It was the perfect amount of food for a 4-6 p.m. shower.

Monkey Banner

I made this banner to hang from the mantle. This is where the mother to be opened her gifts so it gave a nice little backdrop. Don’t you just love that name?!

Monkey Baby Shower

It was a very nice shower and I can’t wait to host another one! All I need is some pregnant friends :)
