One of my very best friends is having a baby. I love giving handmade gifts for new babies and moms. My friend is planning to nurse so I knew I wanted to sew her a nursing cover. This is pretty simple sewing so give it a shot! Here is another nursing cover I made without boning.
You will need:
2 yards of fabric (I chose two different prints)
1 piece of boning (About 1/2 a yard)
Sew or iron on elastic
Lay your washed and ironed fabric on the floor. Put the print sides together. Trim any excess around the edges to make them match. I always snip off the bottom edge for the straps. You will want to make it about 2 inches wide for easy turning.
Pin the sides together.
Fold over a piece of the top of one of the long edges of fabric and sew in the boning. You will only sew the boning into ONE piece of fabric. It will be like a little pocket for the boning. I did this AFTER the next step and it really complicates things. Sew in the boning first, trust me.
Sew around all of the edges leaving an opening on one side. The opening is where the boning is already sewed in. Now you can turn it inside out.
You will then sew in the strap and iron on the elastic. I always sew around the whole outside so that it is cleanly finished.
Now if she gets tired of one side she can flip it over to the other one.
This was my first time using boning and it wasn’t horrible. There was definitely a learning curve. I think that she will really enjoy being able to look down and see her son nursing though.
What is your favorite kind of baby gift?
